Too many characters spoil audio version of 39 Clues

The 39 Clues: The Maze of Bones (Book 1) by Rick Riordan and read by David Pittu; published by Scholastic Audiobooks, New York; 2008.

Too many characters and a fairly complicated plot kept me from enjoying this audiobook.  Other than the main characters, I could not keep the relatives straight and even the challenge laid out by Grace was difficult to sort out aurally.  Apparently, there is an ancient secret of the Cahill family and Grace has challenged each branch of the family to uncover the source of their power.  Young siblings Amy and Dan must also decide if they are going to uncover the secret of what really happened to their parents or continue looking for the clues.  Pittu did a fair job of creating voices for each character.  However, given the number of characters, it was difficult to distinguish between many of them.

I have not read the book but I believe I will now; the audiobook piqued my curiosity even though it frustrated me to listen to.  I would pair this audiobook with the print book to help reluctant or unskilled readers enjoy the series.
