Something for Wimpy readers?

Stink: The Incredible Shrinking Kid by Megan MacDonald, illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds; published by Candlewick Press, Cambridge, Mass.; 2005.

Judy Moody’s adventures are always very popular with the emergent chapter book readers.  Stink, an illustrated novel about her younger brother, had to win the Buckeye Book Award if only riding on Judy Moody’s coattails!  But Stink stands on its own—humor, storytelling and illustrations all work well in this laugh-out-loud story of siblings and school days.  The black and white illustrations really highlight the humor and the large type make it a quick read even for struggling readers.

I would add this to a list of recommended books for third graders—well, I’d include the Judy Moody and Stink books to second graders as well.  Reluctant readers should be interested in the book, if only by the title!  In addition, I think Jeff Kinney’s Wimpy Kid fans would enjoy reading about Stink; it would make a good referral for them, when they’ve exhausted poor Greg’s diaries journals.
