Those darn rabbits!

Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! by Candace Fleming, illustrated by G. Brian Karas; published by Anne Schwartz Book, an imprint of Atheneum Books for Young Readers, New York; 2002.

Who is smarter: Mr. McGreeley or the three munching bunnies?  The rhythmic words build as the antics of the farmer and the rabbits escalate.  Karas’ gouache and acrylic with pencil illustrations support the story–waxing between the orderly world of Mr. McGreeley and the overwhelming freedom of his antagonists.  In the end, an uneasy truce is reached.

Because of the repetition of the verse as dramatic tension builds, I would expect children to participate in the telling of this story.  I would also ask for their predictions of what contraption Mr. McGreeley will add next and how the bunnies will overcome each one.
