So…you want to be President? Read this!

So You Want to Be President? by Judith St. George, illustrated by David Small; published by Philomel Books, a division of Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers; New York; 2000.

Caricatures of the U.S. presidents are featured on the end pages and within the pages of the books.  What a terrific way of drawing in the reader’s eye and expressing the nature of the men!  The story is full of descriptions of the daily lives of the presidents along with some historical facts about the men.  While some material seems trivial, it is interesting to learn about their pets’ names and similar trivia.  I’d certainly be sure that this book were displayed for Presidents’ Day and around election time.

I first read this book when my children became U.S. citizens.  I think it would be appropriate for any foreign-born patrons and to supplement the reading for second graders and up who are learning about the U.S. presidents.
