Too many characters spoil audio version of 39 Clues

The 39 Clues: The Maze of Bones (Book 1) by Rick Riordan and read by David Pittu; published by Scholastic Audiobooks, New York; 2008.

Too many characters and a fairly complicated plot kept me from enjoying this audiobook.  Other than the main characters, I could not keep the relatives straight and even the challenge laid out by Grace was difficult to sort out aurally.  Apparently, there is an ancient secret of the Cahill family and Grace has challenged each branch of the family to uncover the source of their power.  Young siblings Amy and Dan must also decide if they are going to uncover the secret of what really happened to their parents or continue looking for the clues.  Pittu did a fair job of creating voices for each character.  However, given the number of characters, it was difficult to distinguish between many of them.

I have not read the book but I believe I will now; the audiobook piqued my curiosity even though it frustrated me to listen to.  I would pair this audiobook with the print book to help reluctant or unskilled readers enjoy the series.

The Exquisite Corpse Adventure

According to the Library of Congress's Read.gov site: "Ever heard of an Exquisite Corpse? It's not what you might think. An Exquisite Corpse is an old game in which people write a phrase on a sheet of paper, fold it over to conceal part of it and pass it on to the next player to do the same. The game ends when someone finishes the story, which is then read aloud. Our "Exquisite Corpse Adventure" works this way: Jon Scieszka, the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, has written the first episode, which is "pieced together out of so many parts that it is not possible to describe them all here, so go ahead and just start reading!" He has passed it on to a cast of celebrated writers and illustrators, who must eventually bring the story to an end." You can read all 26 chapters here (http://www.read.gov/exquisite-corpse/). You can also listen to it being read, play games, collect clues and test your knowledge!
